Partnering for Shoreline Protection

چکیده
Background Burnett County, located in northwest Wisconsin within a few hours of the Twin-Cities metropolitan region, is home to over 500 lakes (see Figure 1). Heavy development pressures and a strong local identity with the lakes have fueled interest in protecting their health and aesthetic appeal. The county enjoys a long history of partnerships for lake management that includes county agencies, local organizations and lake associations, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, University of WisconsinExtension, and others. In recent years, partners have had a specific interest in getting lakeshore property owners to protect and restore the natural vegetation along their shorelines. In addition to hosting meetings and a variety of educational offerings, Burnett County began an innovative incentive program that provides lakeshore property owners an annual tax credit ($250 the first year and $50 each year after) for maintaining a 35-foot strip of natural vegetation along the shoreline. This effort, the Burnett County Natural Shorelines Program, allows property owners to keep some of the shoreline open for lake access and a viewing corridor, and it offers additional technical and financial assistance for restoring degraded areas. Although the incentive is relatively small compared to prices for lakeshore homes and lots, more than 500 people have enrolled in the program, protecting or restoring more than 40 miles (or roughly 4 percent) of Burnett County shoreline. While the program has been a helpful tool, local partners recognize

Shoreline mapping and shoreline change detection are critical for safe navigation, coastal resource management, coastal environmental protection, and sustainable coastal development and planning. This paper reports the results of IKONOS geopositioning accuracy improvement, showing that a 1-2 meter accuracy can be achieved from 1mresolution IKONOS Geo stereo images. The experiment indicated that...

Shoreline stability is an important issue along much of the Mediterranean’s Coasts. European project MEDDOOC INTERREG BEACHMED-e focused on the strategic management of beach protection for the sustainable development of the Mediterranean coastal zone. In the framework of this project, a video system has been installed in Valras (Gulf of Lions / France) to monitor coastal evolutions and recent p...
متن کاملAssessing shoreline exposure and oyster habitat suitability maximizes potential success for sustainable shoreline protection using restored oyster reefs
Oyster reefs provide valuable ecosystem services that contribute to coastal resilience. Unfortunately, many reefs have been degraded or removed completely, and there are increased efforts to restore oysters in many coastal areas. In particular, much attention has recently been given to the restoration of shellfish reefs along eroding shorelines to reduce erosion. Such fringing reef approaches, ...

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Coastal systems are very dynamic, and their movement is relatively fast due to the collision of onshore and marine environment. The majority of the world's population is concentrated along with the coastal areas. Hormuz Strait coasts are affected by morphological variables due to the hydrodynamics of the sea and the dynamics of coastal and onshore environme...
